Second Blog Post: Aidan Munn/Women in Hip-hop

Hip Hop and the Ever-changing Woman

This picture shows Queen Latifah from years ago and Nicki Minaj today. The picture is trying to portray the difference between how women in the hip-hop world used to be and how they are now. In the picture, Queen Latifah is smiling and wearing an outfit that covers most of her skin. Nicki Minaj, on the other hand, is making a crazy face and has a lot of cleavage showing. This picture can be taken positively or negatively depending on what you think it is showing. One interpretation could be that women were classier back then and that today they are used too much as sex objects. It could also be taken that today's women are more able to express themselves the way they want, including in sexual ways. This is connected to my topic of women and hip-hop. When looking into women and hip-hop, it is very beneficial to know not only what it is now, but how it was in the past also. It shows that the way women in the hip-hop world are treated and thought about has changed a lot recently. This also relates to course themes. It relates to how society views women. In general, men are perceived more as the sexual ones and female's sexuality are usually not talked about. That being said, it can be really uncomfortable for people to see the way women in hip-hop these days have just put their sexuality out there with the way they look and their lyrics. Overall, women's part in the hip-hop world has definitely changed over the years, some for the good, some for the bad.

  1. This post did a great job at comparing the women of hip-hop today and also in the past. I think your right, it is important to compare both because we can see how the gender and sexuality of women in music is continuing to change. I like how you used the comparison of Queen Latifah and Niki Minaj because they both have very difference styles and ways in which they portray themselves. This reminded me a lot of the hip-hop lesson we did in class because Niki Minaj is a good example of a female artists testing the boundaries of women and what they are and are not allowed to say. Overall this was a good post!

  2. I agree with what you are saying, a women's part in Hip Hop has definitely changed. I think women rapper display to much of their sexuality to the world. Back then they weren't focused on sex appeal they were focused on the lyrics on the lyrics of the song. Even though now they still might be focused on the lyrics they are also focused to much on being naked in front of the camera. I think Nicki Minaj shows to much of her body, even though it is nice, I think it displays her in a bad way. Your post really shows how much female rappers has changed over years with the pictures you displayed.

  4. Things in life are constantly changing. of course music changes from decade to decade. Women artists in music want people to listen to thier music. they want people to pay attention to them. in order to do so they must fit into the what society wants to see. back then women raps and singers could afford to dress conservative because that's what people expected. Now people want to see "sexy people" and so of course women rapers and singers are dressing a little sexier. I liked this article because i had not really though about how women artists used to be like back in the day.
